About Galle Lighthouse

Galle Lighthouse, on the southeastern tip of Galle Fort, is Sri Lanka’s oldest lighthouse and one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Built in 1939 near the site of an earlier 19th-century tower, it stands beside ramparts, palm-fringed shores, and sweeping views of the Indian Ocean. Visitors come less for interior access than for the setting: a scenic walk through the UNESCO-listed fort, excellent photo opportunities, and a chance to appreciate Galle’s maritime history in a compact, easy-to-visit spot.
